Disaster Services

Since July of 2007, the American Red Cross of NENY has helped more than 1,000 people after local disasters such as home fires, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous materials spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters. We have given victims a place to stay, food to eat, clothes to wear, crisis counseling, a shoulder to cry on and much more.

Red Cross disaster relief focuses on meeting people’s immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross addresses basic human needs. In addition to these services, the core of Red Cross disaster relief is the assistance given to individuals and families affected by disasters to enable them to resume their normal daily activities independently.

The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, handles inquires from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.

All Red Cross assistance is given free of charge, made possible by the generous contributions of people´s time, money and skills.

How You can Help

The American Red Cross of NENY needs your help! With the help of trained volunteers, we respond to over 300 families, 1,000 people and 170+ incidents per year in our eight county jurisdiction. How do we do it? We have Disaster Action Teams in all eight of our counties trained and ready to assist in a local event.

When a disaster strikes, dedicated paid and volunteer staff respond to the immediate needs of their neighbors. Trained disaster volunteers come from all walks of life and all segments of the community, including seniors, professionals and young adults. Volunteers offer their skills and bring their life experiences to help when needed.

To prepare volunteers to participate in the vital work of the Red Cross, the Red Cross provides free, extensive training for all volunteer positions.

Linda Marchese Red CrossIt is with great sadness that we announce that our Director of Emergency Services,  Linda Marchese, passed away unexpectedly on January 20, 2008.  Linda spent 20 years working for the Red Cross, and in many ways, dedicated her life to the work and ideals of the Chapter, the Red Cross and the people we serve.  She was a key responder in many local and national disasters over the years, and was an invaluable member of our staff. She will be deeply missed.
